Ryan Mccloskey, genetic screening

Genetic screening is one of the many rising ethical dilemmas with the increasing knowledge and understanding of genetics. Genetic screening allows you to see people's risk percentage getting a certain disorder disease or defect through taking DNA samples. Genetic screening is mainly used so people can be warned about genetic defects or risks that they have. For example if someone has traits that make them easily susceptible to cancer, they can be warned ahead of time so they can take the necessary steps for prevention. Some diseases and defects are even curable by the knowledge obtained from genetic screening.
Genetic counseling is where people who have been screened and have the risk of a certain disorder can get help and guidance on how to deal with their condition. Genetic counseling is very popular with people who have genetic disorders.
There much controversy over genetic screening, since with the knowledge obtained from it you can change people's genotypes. Genetic screening in a sense lets scientist play God, deciding how a person will be born. With the knowledge of how the alleles interact parents can change the probability of their children being born with certain traits.
Another fear of the public is genetic discrimination, which would allow people to be denied benefits such as insurance based on their genetic make up and likelihood of obtaining a certain disease. Major films like gattaca have voiced these fears.
23 and Me is a company that, for one thousand dollars, will test a saliva sample from you, and then tell you your genetic make up. You can learn everything from disorders you may have to which parent's taste you inherited to even your ancestry.
